Circle Collabrative
I am thinking about collaborative paintings I really love this if I could figure out how to direct one that would be great!

FAEA CONFERENCE 2010 ORLANDO
This weekend was the FAEA conference in Orlando.
I started out the conference with an Air Dry Clay workshop and made a panda, it got me thinking about how to use clay in my art classes.
I browsed the student Art show and got lots of ideas!
I went to a session on Art Exchange "Among the World" This session talked about how to start an Art Exchange program, which I would like to eventually try on a small scale. This is where students could have a pen pal from another country and exchange Art.
Then my favorite sessions were three "Don't FREAK Out" Dr. Mark Rosenkrantz, TNLI Coordinator Mark Rosenkrantz, a National Board Certified teacher, has been teaching elementary art for over nine years in Miami-Dade County Public Schools at Charles Wyche Elementary. He has received numerous grants for interdisciplinary art projects that are based on teacher collaboration.
The Don't FREAK OUT sessions, they were super practical and offered tons of practical advice. The first session was on procedures and classroom management, the next session was on organizing materials, students, lesson plans, etc, the third was on relationships, this session dealt with teacher to teacher collaboration, communicating with the principal, PTA, students and the community.
So some other sessions that I was able to attend were "Fearless Firing of the Kiln", I learned how to use the kiln and received paperwork on kilns to help de-mystify the kiln. Maybe I can start firing some clay at the Town of Jupiter, I am really hoping the kiln is automatic, if so I will be excited to try some things. We were able to go view the kiln in the vendor hall.
I enjoyed the personal development of artistic skill.
"Artist as a Career" By Dr. Chang, David Y. Chang is a nationally renowned artist. Permanently endorsed by one of the world's most prestigious art institutions Sennelier-Savoir Faire in Paris, his paintings have won numerous professional awards and fellowships including “best of Show” prizes at Florida juried professional art exhibitions.
Dr. Chang spoke on "Perfecting your practice." in the Session
"Artist as a Career"
this was on how to continue to be engaged in creating Art while teaching. This session covered portfolios, photography, representation, as well as gallery shows, and pricing. He is with FIU and leads summer teams to China and France.
I attended a session on "The Shades of GREEN" this was on green projects as well as Art and Science, this session talked about going outside and creating art.
The key note speaker for the first day of the conference was great he spoke on philosophy and the importance of using Art class to deal with issues in the lives of students. He spoke on how Art class can be a starting point for students to think about what is right and wrong etc...
In the key note lecture 2 paintings were compared and contrasted
Jan van Eyck. Giovanni Arnolfini and His Wife Giovanna Cenami (The Arnolfini Marriage). 1434. Tempera on wood.
The sybolism in the piece was discussed: The shoes (holy ground)
The dog (fido-Fidelity)
The dress, and bed suggests fertility
The large waisted figure of the women was the ideal at the time
He mentioned the hands and how the tenderness was evident in the portrait of marriage.
He spoke on the stability, tenderness and peace in this marriage.
Title: The Tempest (The Bride of the Wind)
Kokoschka had a passionate, often stormy affair with Alma Mahler, shortly after the death of her four-year-old daughter Maria Mahler and her affair with Walter Gropius. After several years together, Alma rejected him, explaining that she was afraid of being too overcome with passion. He continued to love her his entire life, and one of his greatest works The Tempest (Bride of the Wind)
The speaker talked about how we can speak into the lives of teens using examples like this.
The trend is that teens think if they find a relationship everything will be perfect. This image is a visual of the unrest of the wrong relationships. He noted the stormy colors and that the couple slept on a tumultuous bed of water, the women slept but you an see the glassy stare of the man who lay awake. He also spoke of the Husdon River School which I found interesting.
The Vendor Fair:
was so interesting and I was able to try a lot of Art supplies and brands. We were able to review MAT and MFA programs and learn advantages for each. Victor spoke with an E.E.D. Professor and that was enlightening! At the vendor Fair I was impressed with all the demos or products, as well as some neat items! I was given tons of goodies to try out and posters.
I visited Square One Art and was able to make my own FREE pendant necklace which will be mailed to me as soon as it is finished. I was able to get some more info on Kilns and you can actually fire glass in a ceramic kiln.
I was able to meet up with the Art Teachers at JCS, Trinity, and The Kings Academy, we went out for dinner one night and had such a great time.
I was able to attend the NEW Art teacher give-a- ways and got classroom posters, an Henri Rosseau video as well as an Art curriculum and 2 books on the great Masters.
I attended the Artist Bazaar and got to see some student, teacher art and was able to get a closer look at the work of Dr. David Chang which is awesome it was so neat to attend his lecture then see his work.
The second keynote speaker:
was a pastelist, from Miami- more details to follow. She spoke on creating she was a student of Chang's and he encouraged her to find the time to develop her skills."Art offers Space Breathing room for the Spirit." Updike. This artist was inspiring she spoke on finding time to CREATE and how that will interest your students in Art. She spoke on the importance of in class demos, and had a little studio IN her classroom! I love that!!
1-The main points that I took a way is that I need to gain control in the classroom by defining and implementing procedures even if that means STOPPING CLASS and going over the procedures.
2-Practical Classroom tips and tricks: I spoke with the Art teachers over dinner and gained practical tips. We talked about on how to create order SO that learning is possible. It was so great to be relieved of guilt and also have some pressure to preform removed and slow things own for students to learn bit, by bit.
3-Art Advocacy was something very important to learn. Far too many people have the perception that the Art class is just a play time, fun and games a free for all. That Art just happens it is all about creativity which can't be learned and other myths. I need to find ways to display an involve the school and community in Art.

Caribbean fruit Basket
Two views
Tonight I taught a class on oil pastel and we drew Caribbean Fruit Baskets.
We started with some fruit props and live pineapple heads.
Students were instructed to sketch the basket and do their best to fill the page as much as possible.
They were also to fill the background with color, and mix in some highlights using white.
This is the basket of fruits that we drew.
You can see the student's work. I was pretty happy with everything- the ones that tried anyway.
Hall Decor Bulletin Boards
So I am the School Decorator.
I take my job very seriously :)
Well I am not the best bulletin Board-er but have been having a good time making banners etc.
I have made the banners by hand and had them all laminated.
I decided to have boards that wouldn't be super high maintenance so I have a lot of student work on display.
My favorite Holiday is Thanksgiving and it is extremely overlooked so I have already begun a large Thanksgiving display.
I love usins scripture wherever I can.
Pre- School Pitched in:
I think that having verses on display is a great way to keep students in the word!
Art Club made this banner it really adds a lot of color to the hallway.
I plan to have a banner each season.
This Noah's ark board is a progressive board that will change to tell the story of Noahs ark and the students have created the Art.
I am really hoping to get the school thinking about World Missions so I have a missions board that will change periodically. I didn't have takers the first time around so this is on China missions and tentmaking.
I am at a loss with the sports board hoping for inspiration...

So I found this awesome student painting stuffed in a corner in the Art room and had to have it for my Spanish room.

I give out the Star of the week for Spanish & Art Classes.
The students receive their certificates in chapel.
When a student finishes a chart first then he or she is the grand prize winner of the school and receives a ribbon and recognition in chapel.

I love weddings and was excited to have the chance to put together an order of services for a friend's wedding:
Birthday and Cake Design
I found this image of a dino that I made for my nephew's birthday. We were actually abel to get the image printed onto a cake for the party which was pretty neat and a great way to carry the theme throughout the party.
Jewelry Logo Design
I had made this logo for a friend to use for a jewelry business and had almost forgotten about it but here is it. I met Carolyn in Little Cayman in 2001 on a short term mission trip where we helped paint a church and worked in a Vacation Bible School for children.
Carolyn make beautiful jewelry and in 2001 she was selling it in the Divi Tiara Dive Resort on Little Cayman.
Friends from the Ivory Coast
Last night some missionary friends from the Ivory Coast came for a visit.
We had such a great time while they were here thy bought a hat with a logo that I had made for them it was so cool to see that I have been able to help them half a world away!

Even though I didn't end up doing graphics full time I have really been able to help with some neat projects and that is always rewarding!

Chinese Paper Cut
Last night's class was on Chinese papercut Art.
I started class by saying hello in chinese and talked about my chinese clothes. the class learned to say hello in chinese and we counted using the hand signals typically used for counting in China.
I brought in some of my papercuts that look very similar to the brightly colored one below.
I received an entire book of these beautiful paper cuts when I left china, the book was a gift from a fellow chinese teacher.
It is gorgeous and the students were amazed!
I taught them to say the 4 tones and they thought that was really neat.
Each students was given an 8x8" black square and a 9x9" red square. We folded the black paper in 4 then cut excess from the unfolded side and made designs.
