Fall Leaves: Dabbling in Pointallism

We started class by talking about seasonal projects and our key verse was:
Genesis 8:22While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

We talked about colors of Fall. The I explained pointillism and color mixing.
After an intro to the project we went outside to  learn about light and shadow as well as colors in nature.
We talked about how one leaf can appear so differently depending on light and shadow.
We noted how shadows in distance and blurry then stark up close.

We also used a sighting technique that most professional artists us to pick out highlights, midtone and shadow. Each student was able to see the variety of color by simply squinting their eyes.

After our walk we went inside to begin our project.

Indian Peacock

This project was one that was completed at our local Town Hall    it is an Indian Peacock.
I started with a drawing sheet. This drawing sheet is similar to a coloring sheet but the student does have to draw and has greater freedom.

We used water color pencils and colored the sheet also used hatching to add interest then simply paint with water.

Self Portraits

This week in Art Class I taught on the subject "who are you in Christ?"
and students learned about proportion and placement in portraits.

We studied works from: August Rodin;
• Toulouse-Lautrec;
• El Greco for elongated figures.
• K: whole figure portraits by-John Singer Sargent

I began by challenging the classes to remember that we are made in the image of God and taught about proportion they studied their faces in the mirror then I did multiple in class demo sketches and the drawing below, this really peaked their interest.

We talked about hair and eye color, as well as adding things that make you, you!
All the portraits were hung in the cafeteria for parent teacher night.

Vincent Van Gogh Comes to the Norton

Paul Gauguin
Paul Gauguin, Christ in the Garden of Olives, 1889. Oil on canvas (West Palm Beach, Norton Museum of Art)
For the next several months the Norton Museum’s celebrated painting by Paul Gauguin, Christ in the Garden of Olives, 1889 (illustrated at right), will be featured in the exhibition Gauguin:  Maker of Myth at the Tate Modern, London, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.  In this work Gauguin portrayed himself in a tragic, iconic mode as Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane on the night of his betrayal by Judas Iscariot.  In a poignant reference to his attempted artistic liaison with Vincent van Gogh, which had recently ended in a debacle, Gauguin has given himself bright orange-red hair—like that of his erstwhile colleague and friend.  During much of our painting’s absence from West Palm Beach the Museum will display, instead, an almost exactly contemporaneous self-portrait by Van Gogh, likewise painted in the immediate aftermath of the contentious and aborted sojourn with Gauguin, at Arles, which lasted from October through December 1888.

Wedding Designs

These are some pics of the designs from our wedding:
I was working at a printer at the time and designed ALL The print materials- a bit of a pain but worth it.

Our photographer is brilliant, one of the best in Palm Beach County and a joy to work with.
Paul really made our day a special and fun. As an artist I totally trusted his judgement and didn't have to think about how I wanted things to look, because his work is strong and creative.  The photography was non-invasive and didn't take time away from our special day!

Paul has a studio here in Palm Beach and in New York City.

Saris were shipped from India for the decor.

The cake, I chose different shaped for each layer as well as a contrasting color scheme for each layer.

I wanted to use pink ans green together and blue and orange so the colors would really pop. Then I wanted gold embellishments, the decorator came up with those designs and did a fabulous job!
I got a cake jewelry topper to add some sparkle.

I think roses are horribly clique and decided that there would be no clique flowers like roses, calla lilies, etc... Orchids were sunk into large vases atop zen rocks, and on opposite tables were Heliconia, Delphinium, Monstera Deliciosa, and some orchids.

St Basil Elementary Art project

Crayola.com has coloring sheets that I used for this.
I enlarged the sheets in illustrator and then printed them.
Students colored them with markers then cut them out. They were given blue paper to paint fireworks on. The used the opposite end of the paintbrush to dip into paint and make the fireworks.
Then they pasted the marker drawing to the firework paper.

Sloth Sanctuary Costa Rica

This was the best thing I did while on the cruise! This was just as fun as seeing giant panda in Chengdu China!
Please visit them if you can Costa Rica is my favorite place mainly because of all the animals it is just great I LOVE it there.
I can't believe how many awesome animals are there!!

The story of the sanctuary is a story about resilience the family lost all in a hurricane and slowly rebuilt and took in injured sloth. Soon everyone brought more injured sloth they grew into a sanctuary and are Family owned and operated, the grandsons will help the grandfather run the company and are in university studying to equip themselves to help the sanctuary!
